Each year, we like to take a look at how the web (and specifically web design) is evolving and cast our predictions at what the new year holds. Our 2012 predictions hit fairly close. While some of our 2013 predictions certainly came true, it looks like some of them (such as flat design) are still taking place as an ongoing trend as we enter 2014.

This year we had the opportunity to speak at WordCamp Toronto, an annual WordPress event we've attended (and thoroughly enjoyed) the last few years.
We chose a topic that was, perhaps, the least obvious of selections--but it was a topic that had really captured our attention for the last year or so, especially after using WordPress for larger scale projects like Raising the Grade with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada (BGCC) and Rogers Youth Fund.
After all, everyone knows WordPress excels as a blogging platform. No one would think twice about implementing it as a CMS for a small business. But what about using it for nationwide projects with daily users are anticipated to grow to the thousands?
If you're just starting out on WordPress, it'll come in waves: first, you'll approach it with all the confidence in the world--this-is-going-to-be-easy will pour out of you and all over your keyboard. Then, in the midst of installing new plugins with a grin, the real swell of how-did-that-happen will come and that moment when it blocks out the sun and you realize you're in over your head will seem like the last moment in which you'll ever want to code. Anything. Ever. And then, suddenly, you'll find yourself out far past that first learning curve, writing your own plugins at the speed of light and daring the clock to challenge you.
But when you first get going on WordPress doing actual development work, it's not always as simple as you might think. Fortunately, if you're tackling a WordPress problem, there's probably someone else out there who has already conquered it.
