“Calling all youth: Express Yourself”
Thousands of voices. Various content types. One web portal. That was the mission of The World According to Us. Our partner, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada looked us up again, and this time, it was to create a platform for aggregating the voices of youth from their clubs into one hub.
In the wake of conducting the largest national youth survey in BGCC history, the organization wanted to create a platform for young people in all of their clubs and communities across Canada to express what’s important to them, and share these opinions using today’s relevant content types. By sharing ideas and best practices, the goal is to increase youth engagement and eliminate the boundaries of geography.
Permission to post, Ma’am!
We developed a complex user permissions hierarchy in preparation for allowing different user types to post. With thousands of youth members, club staff and administrators given free reign to share their thoughts, we made sure we had approval structures in place when developing the platform.
Signups made easy
How do you get the youth to adopt and sign on quickly? Integrate yourself with what they already love! We made sure that apart from being able to create a The World According to Us account, signups can be accomplished via Twitter API or Facebook SDK so that the you can use their existing social media accounts to log right into site.
BGCC really wanted this platform to be able to take on anything that the youth would want to share. We worked hard on making it easy for them to post and share pretty much any type of media, including articles, audio, blogs, photos, polls, stories, and videos by developing a customized template upload process that takes the guesswork out of sharing.

One year later, we see posts that have over 10,000 views and hundreds of comments on The World According to Us. This is proof to us that the project has succeeded in engaging youth and we’re ecstatic to have the front row tickets to watch it grow.
